Casting…

Monkeywood Theatre are casting Mancunian actors for a research and development project in August – October 2010 to develop our new play which will tour in Spring 2011.

Following our 2010 national tour of Maine Road, we are intensively developing a new play focussing on sisters growing up in South Manchester during the 70s and 80s.

Key dates are:

13 – 18 August: R & D
13 – 22 September: Readthrough and workshops with community groups

13 – 18 October: Rehearsals
19 October: Script in Hand performance
1 – 2 November: Script in Hand performance

As this is an R & D project, the casting requirements are reasonably flexible, so we are considering applications from a diverse range of actors both male and female. However, we are particularly interested to hear from:

  • Actors who have experience of creating work collaboratively and/or writing
  • Actors who are from and live in Manchester
  • Female actors with a playing age of 35 – 50
  • Actors who hold a current CRB enhanced disclosure

Please email Spotlight links or cvs and photos, along with a covering letter detailing relevant experience, to info@monkeywoodtheatre.co.uk by Friday 16 July 2010. We are very sorry, but we will only reply to those applicants who are invited to audition.

Come To Where Sarah’s From…

Monkeywood’s associate writer, Sarah McDonald Hughes, is very excited to be taking part in Come to Where I’m From, a commission by Paines Plough and the Royal Exchange Theatre. The project sees 61 playwrights from across the UK return to theatres in their home towns to write plays about the places that shaped them.

Come to Where I’m From will be a special presentation of monologues, performed by local Manchester writers at the Royal Exchange on Wednesday 3 November 2010 at 6pm.  The commissions have been inspired by their memories and experiences of their home town, examining if home is really where the heart is.

Tickets are available from the Royal Exchange box office on 0161 833 9833 at £5

The end of the (Maine) Road…

So, Monkeywood are now mourning the end of the Maine Road tour, which finished to a packed house at Halifax’s Square Chapel Centre for the Arts on Fri 30 April 2010.

Onto what is next….which is the research and development phase of our brand new project, to be announced this summer. We’re really excited for what we hope will be an even bigger and better production than Maine Road was.

Watch this space where we’ll keep you posted with every update as it happens…

Maine Road heads to Halifax

The Lowry were inundated with calls to their box office for tickets to see Maine Road last week, though the show had been sold out months in advance. Anyone who didn’t get tickets for The Lowry have another opportunity to see it if they take a short journey along the M62 to Halifax Square Chapel. A delightfully atmospheric venue, Monkeywood will be performing Maine Road on Fri 30 April at 8pm. Tickets cost £10 (£8 concessions) and can be purchased online through this link to dig yorkshire or at the box office on 01422 349 422 or in person.

Thanks to Manchester City FC

We’re delighted with how fantastically supportive MCFC have been of Monkeywood and our production of Maine Road. A month or so ago, local lad and player for the Blues, Nedum Onuaha, met up with us at Maine Road in Moss Side to talk to Sarah about her inspiration for the play and what Maine Road meant to her. We had a lovely afternoon strolling down memory lane with someone who not only remembered supporting the Blues there, but playing for them too. MCFC also came down to some Maine Road rehearsals and will be attending the premiere of the production on Fri 12 March at The Lowry.

Click here to watch their nostalgic VT and here to see the news item they also posted.

Many thanks to Nedum, Neil Cole and Karen Procter at MCFC!
